Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI)

The CBI´s primary clients and direct beneficiaries are:

1. Exporters in developing countries who (wish to) export to Europe;
2. Business support organisations (BSOs) in developing countries; and
3. Companies in Europe who (wish to) buy from developing countries.

The first two categories exclusively contain companies and BSOs from a selected group of low-income countries. Buyers from Europe may be located in any of the 27 EU member countries or in Norway or Switzerland.

The CBI is active in a number of specific market sectors and has built its client base around those sectors.


1. One of the fundamental questions you need to answer when considering exports is: Is my company ready for exports?

Exporting is not as easy as many people think. It requires thorough preparation, creativity and visionary leadership, strong fundamentals, commitment and endurance.

CBI has a longstanding experience in guiding companies to export success. A range of manuals and export programmes is available for companies to prepare for export ventures. Besides, you can use an export readiness checker for a quick assessment of export fitness.

In the following steps, we will guide you through the process of exporting. At the same time, we will provide you with relevant information to read and tools to use in each step.

2. CBI provides BSOs with up-to-date information about European markets. You will find information on trade flows, market developments, market opportunities, prices and potential business partners. In addition, CBI also supports BSOs in creating and enhancing their Market Information services.

CBI's market information services consist of:

Assistence to BSOs to improve their Market Information services (e.g. a market information system): training in and facilitation of improved web enabled information services of BSOs.

The Market Info Database: A market information database with relevant and up-to-date information on various aspects of the CBI sectors.

The publications: Downloadable market reports, market briefs and fashion forecasts on a regular basis.

BSO staff training: A seminar in the Netherlands called ‘Market Intel’ focused on enhancing the information services of BSOs.
