The company started production in 1975 and was later bought by Steve  Davison and Neil McMurray. It has over many years proven to make long lasting, rugged and reliable products designed for the harsh conditions in Africa. Their products are widely regarded as the ‘Land Rovers’ of the fridge and freezer world.

 

The use of eutectic tank technology, which allows the fridges to stay cold with limited electricity, and the development of solar powered fridges has allowed the company to develop products that are needed in remote places in Africa that are very often off the power grid, have limited or interrupted power, require battery, generator or solar alternatives or a combination of these. Some products such as blood and vaccines need to be kept at very critical temperatures in order to maintain their structure and this is where minus 40 comes in. The fridges and freezers can operate with various power options allowing clinics to store vaccines and blood safely and securely, food retailers to chill and freeze products during power outages, , game lodges to be able to serve ice cold beer in the bush, campers and caravan owners to maintain their supplies while travelling from camp to camp, and fishing boats to be able to preserve fish at sea. Minus 40 have a product to suit most refrigeration requirements, and will develop a solution if they haven’t already got one.

 

Most of their fridges and freezers run on  220 volts and will accept generator power or solar systems that charge batteries which allow refrigeration in almost any place. They supply a solar kit to match the units, which includes photovoltaic panels, mounting frame, deep cycle batteries, charge regulator and wiring. Minus 40 also build coldrooms  that use the eutectic tank technology for remote commercial and industrial requirements. A useful device available is the remote monitoring and alarm signal equipment where the temperature of the fridges can be monitored and controlled remotely by cell phone or computer.

 

It has extended its product range to enable the expansion of the cold chain to third parties by manufacturing ice block making machines, flake ice machines, cube ice makers, and even refrigerated vending units on motorbikes.

 

The products are built so that if a fridge is delivered anywhere in Africa the operation of the unit will not be affected by transit over rough terrain, high ambient temperatures or lack of maintenance.

This applies equally to its freezer trailers and vaccine fridges, which are used throughout Africa. It handles all the export logistics, transport and installation to most locations in Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands, and is looking to expand sales into the Middle East, and South America.
